Geologists have discovered large low-shear velocity provinces or superplumes surrounding the Earth’s core, representing 8% of the mantle’s volume. The origin and composition of these massive structures remain unknown, with theories suggesting they could be remnants of a protoplanet collision or ancient continent collisions. Scientists recently identified these superplumes using seismic tomography.
