Coal hunters circle Africa’s first wilderness and rhino sanctuary

Mining companies are encircling Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve in South Africa for coal deposits, with some prospectors extending claims up to the park’s boundary fence. Despite some withdrawals, over a dozen companies have applied for mining rights near the wildlife sanctuary, potentially leading to dynamite blasting and strip-mining near the Big Five conservation area and the country’s first wilderness zone.
