MTN South Africa and Lynk Global made Africa’s first satellite-to-smartphone voice call in Vryburg without a dish or satellite phone. The call connected to a low-Earth orbit satellite 500km above, showing how satellite tech can aid mobile access in underserved areas. Approved by Icasa, the trial aims to extend coverage to 99% of the population, especially in rural areas.
