‘A failure of governance and planning’ — the ongoing pit toilet crisis at SA schools

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube admits missing the deadline to eliminate pit toilets in public schools by March 2025. Despite eradicating 96% of pit toilets, 141 schools still have unsafe facilities. Gwarube aims to complete 90 schools by July 2025, bringing the completion rate to over 98%. The Eastern Cape has the highest number of schools with pit toilets.
