South Africa’s official unemployment rate rose to 32.9% in Q1 2025 from 31.9% in Q4 2024. Employed individuals decreased by 291,000 to 16.8 million, while jobless individuals increased by 237,000 to 8.2 million. Formal sector jobs fell by 245,000, with losses in trade, construction, private households, and community services. Informal sector employment increased by 17,000.
