The City of Johannesburg plans to raise the prepaid electricity surcharge from R200 to R270 per month, despite previous suggestions of review or removal. The surcharge, implemented in July 2024, has sparked public outcry over rising electricity costs. The city’s draft budget for 2025/2026 proposes keeping the service charge at R70 and increasing the network capacity charge from R130 to R200 to align costs with supply.
