Approximately 2,000 South African troops remain trapped in eastern DRC by M23 rebels, with no imminent release in sight. Conditions are dire, with reinforcements sent to potentially extract them. Negotiations for their release are ongoing, with the troops unable to retreat without SADC approval. The bodies of 14 soldiers killed in January were recently repatriated after negotiations with the rebels.
