South Africa’s gold mining industry, once a global leader, has declined significantly since the late 1980s, resulting in the loss of over 440,000 jobs. The industry, which began in 1886, fueled the rapid development of Johannesburg and was supported by British capital and cheap black migrant labor. By the 1970s, South Africa produced over two-thirds of global gold output, peaking at over 1,000 tonnes.
