South Africa faces a licensing crisis as the only driver’s license card printer in the country has broken down, leaving thousands of motorists without valid cards. The machine, located in Pretoria, stopped working in February 2025, causing a backlog in processing applications. The Department of Transport is working with the machine’s supplier in France to repair it, but the issue may take weeks to resolve.
