Rising food prices in South Africa: April 2025 Household Affordability Index

Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group reported a 1.7% increase in the average cost of the Household Food Basket in April 2025, reaching R5,420.30. Civil society groups are concerned about rising food prices. Year-on-year, the basket cost rose by 1.6%. In April 2025, 24 out of 44 tracked foods increased in price, with notable increases in items like tomatoes (26%) and onions (11%).
