Only three South African universities made it to the top 500 in the 2025 Center for World University Rankings, down from four in 2024. Tshwane University of Technology dropped out. Concerns were raised about the universities’ ability to compete globally, with nine of the 12 ranked institutions slipping down the list due to declining research performance. University of Cape Town fell to 275th place.
