Chantal Sombonos-Van Tonder continues her father’s legacy as the woman behind Chicken Licken, a successful non-American-owned fried chicken franchise. George Sombonos, the founder, learned the food industry from his father’s Dairy Den in Johannesburg. Trips to the US in the 1970s inspired him to create South Africa’s iconic fast-food brand. In 1972, he discovered a fried chicken restaurant in Waco, Texas.
