Two more provinces in South Africa on the brink of having more people unemployed than working

Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape are nearing North West’s high unemployment rate, with over half of the working-age population unemployed or not seeking work. Stats SA’s latest report for Q1 2025 shows Mpumalanga at 49.3% and Eastern Cape at 49.0% unemployment rates. South Africa’s overall unemployment rate has risen to 32%.
